New developments have surfaced in the case of Charlotte Sena. Just hours after authorities confirmed that the 9-year-old, who vanished from New York’s Moreau Lake State Park on Sept. 30, had been found safe, the New York State Police identified the suspect in custody.
“Craig N. Ross Jr., 46, of Ballston Spa, NY, has been charged with kidnapping in the first degree, an A-1 Felony,” the police stated in an Oct. 3 press release. “He was processed at SP Latham and then arraigned at the Milton Town Court, where he was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail.”
Police indicated that more charges are likely as the investigation continues.
Over the weekend, an Amber Alert was issued for Charlotte after she went missing while riding her bike in the Saratoga County park. “She disappeared almost into thin air,” Charlotte’s aunt Jene Sena told NBC News during the search. “It was minutes, minutes, between when she was last seen and when she wasn’t there anymore.”
Two days later, authorities announced that Charlotte had been found alive. “Through the course of the investigation, State Police identified an individual as being in the area of the Moreau Lake State Park around the time Charlotte went missing,” police detailed in an Oct. 2 press release. “Further investigation led to the search of multiple residences where the individual is known to reside. At approximately 6:32 p.m. on October 2, 2023, State Police located Charlotte Sena safe and in good health. The suspect was taken into custody.”
Authorities expressed their gratitude for the community’s support throughout the search. “This investigation is a culmination of multiple agencies working together for the common goal of bringing this child home to her loving family,” they continued. “We cannot emphasize enough how appreciative we are for the support we received from Charlotte’s community, friends, and family.”
Charlotte’s disappearance had sent shockwaves through the community and prompted a large-scale search effort involving local, state, and federal agencies. Volunteers from the local community also played a crucial role in the search, providing assistance and support to law enforcement.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul praised the collaborative efforts in locating Charlotte. “This was a coordinated effort by many different agencies and the community,” she said in a statement. “We are grateful for the tireless work of the New York State Police, FBI, and all who played a part in bringing Charlotte home safely.”
In the days leading up to Charlotte’s recovery, the search efforts intensified, with law enforcement combing through dense woods and conducting door-to-door inquiries. The community remained hopeful, holding vigils and offering support to Charlotte’s family.
The investigation into Craig N. Ross Jr.’s background and actions is ongoing. Authorities are piecing together his movements and any possible connections to the area where Charlotte disappeared. “We are committed to uncovering every detail in this case,” said a spokesperson for the New York State Police. “The safety of our children and our community is our top priority, and we will pursue justice to the fullest extent.”
The ordeal has brought renewed attention to child safety and the importance of community vigilance. Experts emphasize the need for parents to have regular conversations with their children about safety and awareness. “It’s crucial that children know they can talk to their parents or a trusted adult if something feels wrong or if they encounter someone they don’t know,” said child safety advocate John Walsh.
Charlotte’s family expressed their immense relief and gratitude in a statement. “We are overwhelmed with joy to have Charlotte back with us,” they said. “We cannot thank everyone enough for their prayers, support, and dedication to finding our daughter. We ask for privacy as we focus on Charlotte’s well-being and recovery.”
The case remains a sobering reminder of the dangers that exist but also highlights the power of community and coordinated efforts in ensuring the safety and protection of children. As the investigation continues, the community remains united in their support for Charlotte and her family, demonstrating resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity.
