The football community is mourning the tragic loss of former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett, who died on June 27 in an apparent drowning off a Florida beach. Mallett was 35 years old. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office reported that first responders were called to a beach in Destin around 2:12 p.m. local time following reports of a group struggling to return to shore from a nearby sandbar.

According to authorities, Mallett went under the water and was not breathing when lifeguards pulled him out. Despite lifesaving measures, Mallett was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. An official cause of death has not yet been released.

Mallett first gained national attention in 2007 as a player for the University of Michigan. He transferred to the University of Arkansas the following year but had to sit out the 2008 season due to NCAA rules. He then served as the Arkansas Razorbacks’ quarterback for two seasons, leading them to a Sugar Bowl appearance, before being drafted into the NFL in 2011.

In the NFL, Mallett began his career with the New England Patriots, serving as the backup quarterback to Tom Brady for three seasons. Rest in Peace brother.” Ravens head coach John Harbaugh also offered his condolences, saying, “Ryan was a part of us. I will always remember the love he had for his teammates and for making the most of, and enjoying every football day while here.”

Former Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Bobby Petrino, who coached Mallett during his standout seasons at the university, also shared his grief. “Ryan was not only a great player but also a great person,” Petrino said. “He had an infectious personality and was a true leader on and off the field. His loss is deeply felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
